Cai Shuxin discusses the symbolic nature of color in oil painting (from "Chinese Art")
"Imagery" is a category in Chinese painting aesthetics. In artistic creation, it refers to the psychological image formed by the fusion of subjective feelings and objective objects. Imagery emphasizes the subject's full perception of objective objects, strengthening subjective feelings in the depiction, and tending towards subjectivity, emotionality, and expressiveness in its form of expression. "Intention" originates from the painter's inner feelings and is expressed through objects. "Image" is actually a vessel for the subject's "intention," possessing the subject's feelings and not merely a simple reproduction. In a sense, in oil painting, the creation and composition of color are a phenomenon that expresses the painter's "intention" as an "image," and simultaneously, it is an artistic expression of the painter's inner world. This is precisely the imagery of color language in oil painting.
