Artist Profile

Introduction and Experience
Chen Yufu was born beneath Hutou Mountain in Ruisui, Hualien, Taiwan. After graduating from junior high school, he entered a traditional stone-carving apprenticeship, learning to sculpt guardian lions, religious figures, and other folk craft forms that laid the foundation for his lifelong artistic practice. Over the years, Chen gradually expanded from traditional stone carving into contemporary stone art, developing a distinctive approach that transforms the enduring solidity of stone into works of warmth, vitality, and refined craftsmanship.
Deeply devoted to Hualien’s distinctive rose stone, Chen became especially known for his innovative “stone book” creations. In these works, the natural veining and coloration of sliced and polished stone evoke the layered textures of ancient manuscripts and traditional landscape paintings. His celebrated work, Book of Sages, received the First Golden Stone Award and was later exhibited within Taiwan’s Presidential Office, helping to elevate the profile of rose stone art among collectors and the wider public.
Chen later founded the Golden Rose Stone Museum and Jian Yi Rose Stone Studio, dedicating himself to the promotion, preservation, and collection of Taiwan’s stone art. Through his practice, the geological beauty of Taiwanese stone is transformed into a distinctive artistic language that bridges craftsmanship, nature, and contemporary aesthetics.
