Artist Profile

Introduction and Experience
Chiang Yitsai (b. 1973, Taoyuan, Taiwan) graduated from the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University, specializing in traditional Chinese painting. A disciple of Sun Chiachin, Chiang studied the artistic philosophy of Zhang Daqian and devoted his early practice to the study of masterworks from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, establishing a strong foundation in classical brush-and-ink traditions. From his university years onward, he immersed himself in historical copywork and the study of art history, shaping a creative philosophy grounded in “learning from the ancients, learning from nature, and learning from the self.”
Working across traditional formats—including folding fans, round fans, handscrolls, albums, hanging scrolls, screens, bamboo and wood carving, and ceramic painting—Chiang’s practice embodies a refined literati elegance rooted in Eastern aesthetics. Integrating calligraphy and painting with fluid harmony, he employs boneless painting, fine-line drawing, and layered ink techniques to depict birds, flowers, and landscapes with technical precision and lyrical sensitivity.
Drawing inspiration from the legacies of the “Three Masters Who Crossed the Sea,” Yu Youren, and Chiang Chaoshen, Chiang Yitsai pursues a visual language centered on spiritual vitality and expressive brushwork. His practice reflects an enduring commitment to the timeless resonance of classical ink painting within a contemporary context.
