Artist Profile

Introduction and Experience
Lin Fengmian (1900–1991), originally named Lin Fengming, was a native of Meixian County, Guangdong Province. He was a pivotal artist and educator in the history of modern Chinese art and an important pioneer of the concept of "integration of Chinese and Western art" in modern painting. He was known as one of the "Four Great Principals" along with Yan Wenliang, Xu Beihong, and Liu Haisu.
At the beginning of the 20th century, amidst dramatic changes in Chinese thought and culture, Lin Fengmian pioneered the introduction of European modern art concepts. He advocated integrating Western painting techniques of perspective, composition, and color into the traditions of Chinese ink painting and calligraphy, thus opening a new direction for modern Chinese art. In 1928, he founded the National Academy of Art in Hangzhou (now the China Academy of Art), nurturing important artists such as Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun, and Wu Guanzhong, exerting a profound influence on later generations.
Lin Fengmian's works span oil painting, ink painting, and mixed media, often featuring themes of ladies, landscapes, and opera. His paintings frequently employ square compositions, creating a spacious and lyrical style with a sense of solitude and tranquility. He skillfully uses vibrant colors and simplified forms, blending Cubism, Expressionism, and Eastern aesthetics to reveal a profound concern for life, peace, and nature.
His life was marked by war and political turmoil, with many of his works destroyed during the War of Resistance against Japan and the Cultural Revolution, making the surviving authentic pieces all the more precious. In his later years, Lin Fengmian lived in Hong Kong, where his works were highly regarded in the international art world and auction market, achieving record-breaking prices. His artistic achievements not only laid the foundation for modern Chinese painting but also continue to inspire later generations' artistic imagination regarding the fusion of East and West and the juxtaposition of ancient and modern.
