Artist Profile

Introduction and Experience
Lin Fengmian (1900–1991), born Lin Fengming in Meixian, Guangdong, was a visionary pioneer of modern Chinese art and art education. Widely regarded as one of the foremost advocates of integrating Eastern and Western artistic traditions, he is celebrated alongside Yan Wenliang, Xu Beihong, and Liu Haisu as one of China’s “Four Great Academy Presidents.”
Working during an era of profound cultural transformation, Lin introduced European modernist concepts into Chinese art discourse, integrating Western approaches to perspective, composition, and color with the expressive traditions of Chinese ink painting and calligraphy. In 1928, he founded the National Academy of Art in Hangzhou (now the China Academy of Art), where he mentored generations of influential artists, including Zao Wouki, Chu Tehchun, and Wu Guanzhong.
Lin Fengmian’s paintings are renowned for their lyrical atmosphere, simplified forms, and distinctive square compositions depicting female figures, landscapes, and opera subjects. Combining elements of Cubism, Expressionism, and Eastern aesthetics, his work conveys a quiet emotional depth marked by elegance, solitude, and introspection.
Although many of his works were lost during periods of war and political upheaval, Lin’s surviving paintings remain highly celebrated internationally. His enduring legacy continues to shape the dialogue between tradition and modernity, East and West, within the history of modern Chinese art.
