Artist Profile

Introduction and Experience
Song Junjie (b. 1966, Dunhua, Jilin Province, China) is a leading contemporary practitioner of knife painting and the son of Song Wanqing, founder of the art form. Trained from early childhood under his father’s guidance, Song later expanded his artistic language through the study of traditional Chinese painting, oil painting, and Western art, developing a distinctive style that balances traditional spirit with a contemporary sensibility.
Working primarily with steel knives alongside custom-made tools of rubber and foam, Song employs subtractive techniques of scraping, carving, and wiping away pigment to create richly layered textures. Integrating the spatial depth and tonal complexity of oil painting with the expressive vocabulary of Chinese ink traditions, his landscapes depict mountains, waterfalls, forests, and shifting seas of clouds with rhythmic vitality and atmospheric resonance.
Song Junjie currently serves as President of the Jilin Knife Painting Research Association and has been recognized as a representative inheritor of Intangible Cultural Heritage. His works have been exhibited internationally across Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and major art fairs, while Changbai Snow Peaks has been permanently collected by the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts Museum. Through both artistic practice and publication, he continues to advance the development of knife painting as a distinctive contemporary art form.
