Artist Introduction
Introduction and Experience
Tong Wu-yi, born in 1967 in Hsinchu County, Taiwan, is one of Taiwan's most important contemporary watercolor and tempera artists. Currently a full-time artist, he graduated from the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University. Growing up in the coastal countryside of Hsinchu, his long-standing close connection with nature and the land became the deepest source of inspiration for his artistic creations.
Tong Wuyi excels at creating works using mixed media, including watercolor and tempera. His style combines realism and poetry, characterized by delicate brushstrokes, rich layers, and skillful use of light and shadow and transparent colors to create a tranquil and profound atmosphere. His paintings often use "water" as a symbolic theme to explore the flow of life, the rhythm of nature, and the balance of the mind, reflecting his contemplation and respect for the "coexistence of all things."
His works not only showcase superb technique but also contain philosophical reflections and humanistic concerns. The mountains, clouds, fields, and figures in his paintings often possess a restrained yet gentle quality. Tong Wuyi once said, "Creation is a process of returning to the soul, a search for one's original self between water and light."
Tong Wu-yi has held numerous solo and group exhibitions both domestically and internationally, including "The Primal - Tong Wu-yi's Creative Exhibition," "Eastern Realm of the Heart," and "February in the Human World" series. He has also received numerous awards, including the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition Watercolor Award, the Hsinchu Art Exhibition Zhubei Award, and the Taipei County Art Exhibition First Prize. His works are highly regarded by the art community and collectors, and he is currently one of the most representative artists in the Taiwanese watercolor art scene.
