Introduction and Experience
A renowned professional oil painter from Taiwan, born in Chiayi in 1964, his unique artistic style combines the tension of Western oil painting with the vivid charm of Eastern ink painting. He emphasizes the interplay of light and shadow, rhythm, and selection, while incorporating contemporary spirit and emotion. He founded the Wei Chi-Yi Studio and continues to explore his artistic life and convey his inner vision through his works.
Wei Chi-yi majored in Western painting in his early years and graduated from the National Academy of Arts (Department of Fine Arts, Western Painting Group). In his preface and interviews, he often mentioned that he was committed to integrating the spirit of Eastern ink and wash into the structure of oil painting in order to achieve a balance between tension and artistic conception in the picture. His paintings often reflect the pursuit of "illusion and reality", "brushwork tension" and "rhythm", and in terms of subject matter, he pays more attention to the integration of the daily life of ordinary Taiwanese people and the natural environment.
Wei Chi-yi's work emphasizes the "fusion of Chinese and Western styles": he employs Western techniques of light and shadow and tension in the form and structure of oil paintings, while simultaneously introducing Eastern ink lines, tones, and spirit. He excels at creating a sense of rhythm and pictorial tension between the real and the virtual, with sharp and precise brushstrokes. He often uses everyday scenes or natural landscapes as his subjects, expressing his feelings about life, time, and humanity. His works frequently feature scenes of Taiwanese towns, old streets, fields, and riverbanks, with a calm and restrained style that conveys compassion and care for the land and its people.
