Artist Profile

Introduction and Experience
Wu Zuoren (1908–1997), born in Suzhou, Jiangsu, was a pivotal painter and art educator in the development of modern Chinese art. After enrolling at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in 1927, he studied under Xu Beihong before traveling to France in 1930 to attend the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Returning to China in 1935, Wu devoted his life to artistic creation and pedagogy, serving successively as professor, president, and honorary president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), where he profoundly influenced generations of Chinese artists.
In his artistic practice, Wu synthesized Eastern and Western traditions, developing a style that integrated the lyrical and expressive spirit of Chinese ink painting into the medium of oil. Emphasizing rhythmic brushwork and the organic unity of composition, he transcended literal realism to capture the inner vitality and spirit of his subjects. Through dynamic variations of palette knife and brush technique, he achieved a refined harmony between form and essence, cultivating a personal aesthetic characterized by elegance, restraint, and quiet strength.
Committed throughout his life to artistic ideals and cultural exchange, Wu Zuoren was awarded the French Order of Arts and Letters in 1984. His legacy as a bridge between artistic traditions continues to exert a lasting influence on the evolution of modern Chinese painting.
