Artist Profile

Introduction and Experience
Yang Shanshen (1913–2004) was a leading figure of the second generation of the Lingnan School, widely regarded as its last great master. Born in Guangdong, he studied classical Chinese painting before forging a close artistic relationship with Lingnan School founder Gao Jianfu. He later trained at the Domoto Art Institute in Kyoto, where he synthesized traditional brushwork with Western approaches to composition and direct observation—an innovative approach highly praised by Xu Beihong.
Renowned for his mastery across landscapes, figures, and animals, Yang skillfully balanced gongbi precision with xieyi spontaneity. In 1970, he founded the Chunfeng Society in Hong Kong, devoting himself to art education and cultural exchange. Awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star and the Visual Arts Lifetime Achievement Award, Yang left an enduring legacy in modern Chinese ink painting.
