Artist Profile

Introduction and Experience
Yu Youren (1879–1964) is recognized as the “Saint of Cursive Script” for his role in modernizing the calligraphic tradition. Born in Sanyuan, Shaanxi, he devoted his early career to studying ancient stele inscriptions, developing a style characterized by broad, fluid lines that departed from the rigid conventions of his time.
His most significant contribution was the creation of “Standard Cursive Script.” In 1931, he established the Cursive Script Society to systematize historical cursive forms into a unified, legible, and efficient system. Guided by his principle that “beauty must never contradict nature,” his calligraphy embodies an effortless flow that balances structural strength with lyrical ease.
Yu’s work transcends both social and functional boundaries, appearing in official inscriptions as well as everyday signage. Characterized by naturalness and integrity, his brushwork reflects the Confucian ideal of cultivated character, standing as a lasting legacy of 20th-century Chinese cultural heritage.
