Work Description

This monumental horizontal work pays homage to and reinterprets Giuseppe Castiglione’s Qing dynasty masterpiece, One Hundred Horses. Enlarging and reconstructing the original composition in oil, Cai Tiancong preserves the horses’ lifelike presence and dynamic beauty while introducing a distinctly contemporary sensibility. Weathered colors and expressive brushwork create a spatial image that moves between resemblance and abstraction, allowing forms to remain recognizable while resisting literal representation.

Through the interplay of Eastern and Western techniques, Cai creates a dialogue between classical imagery and contemporary expression. This synthesis bridges historic court traditions with modern painterly texture, giving this celebrated masterpiece a renewed visual language for the present day.
