Work Description
This elegant porcelain vase is distinguished by its graceful form, its flowing contours unfolding with the fluidity of water beneath a luminous ivory glaze. On one side, delicate famille rose plum blossoms emerge in vivid bloom, their gnarled branches rendered with restrained strength and quiet refinement.
Opposite the painting appears a seven-character quatrain by Chang Daichien:
“After ten thousand miles, I return to the mountains of my homeland;
By the stream I build a humble dwelling of three bays.
Planting plum trees and raising cranes shall complete my remaining years;
Beneath moonlit blossoms, I rest beside the cranes in sleep.”
The harmony between painting and poetry evokes the artist’s profound longing for his homeland during his later years at the Abode of Illusions in Taiwan, while expressing his enduring yearning for reclusion within nature. Within the quiet elegance of the vessel, the spirit of the literati—aloof yet deeply poetic—lingers gently across time.
