Work Description
In Buddha in a Dream, Chen Wenjye transforms steel and cypress into a meditative sculptural presence suspended between strength and stillness. The fragmented Buddha face, constructed from cut and reassembled iron plates, suggests a fractured dream gradually reforged into harmony, while the dark metallic surface carries the quiet traces of time and inner transformation.
Contrasting the cold density of steel, the warm grain of cypress introduces an organic sense of breath and spiritual calm, grounding the work in both nature and material memory. Blossoming metal flowers and the perched iron crow evoke themes of awakening, vigilance, and unrealized aspiration.
Rather than depicting a literal Buddha figure, the sculpture becomes a reflection on the inner self: a search for softness within hardness, and serenity forged through the fractures of contemporary life.
