Work Description

Inspired by the legendary Queen Hatshepsut—one of the most renowned female pharaohs of Ancient Egypt—this painting reflects Christiane Vleugels’ refined mastery of portraiture. During a challenging period early in her career, she sustained herself by painting commissioned portraits and producing meticulous copies of classical works, an experience that greatly sharpened her technical precision.

In this work, the Queen emerges with quiet majesty. Intricate earrings and elegantly adorned garments are rendered with delicate brushwork, the fabric appearing to drift softly in an unseen breeze. Subtle gradations of green, blue, and gold create a luminous harmony, conveying both regal splendor and dignified strength.
