Taiwan Buffaloes
(also known as Southern Land) is a plaster bas-relief completed by Huang Tushui in 1930 and is regarded as one of the most important works in Taiwanese art history. The original is housed at Taipei Zhongshan Hall and was designated a National Treasure in 2009, becoming the first twentieth-century artwork in Taiwan to receive this distinction.
The relief depicts a tranquil rural scene in which three shepherd boys and five water buffalo rest beneath banana trees, sharing a moment of quiet repose. The rounded, powerful forms of the buffalo reveal the artist’s keen observation and mature technique, while conveying a serene and enduring affection for Taiwan’s rural life.
