Work Description

This pair of calligraphic couplets is executed in a fluid combination of running and cursive script. At times the brushwork appears measured and composed, while at others it becomes swift and animated, creating a dynamic rhythm of ink and movement across the paper. The paired inscriptions—“As mountain birds take flight, yellow leaves fall” and “The sound of the wooden fish resonates amid the white snow”—evoke both the tranquility of nature and a contemplative state of mind.

Signed Junweng, one of Hwang Chunpi’s later sobriquets, the work reveals a masterful balance between disciplined structure and expressive freedom. Through flowing brushwork and sudden variations in density, Hwang demonstrates his distinctive ability to unite the classical traditions of Chinese calligraphy with his own vigorous and deeply personal artistic spirit.
