Work Description

Li Chimao’s Oxherding reveals the artist’s keen humanistic observation and masterful command of ink. A young herder in vivid red sits calmly atop a water buffalo, his relaxed expression and bright attire set against the buffalo’s rich, vigorous form. Through spontaneous, sweeping lines and powerful textural strokes, Li conveys the weight of the animal moving through water, while the ripples lend the scene a sense of fluid motion. The contrast between solidity and openness gives the composition both depth and dynamism.

The inscription “大空吾兄” in the upper right adds a personal note, suggesting the work was created as a gesture of friendship. Alive with movement and spirit, the painting transforms an ordinary rural scene into a distinctly modern visual language, infused with both robust energy and an unaffected sense of innocence.
