Work Description

The Eighteen Arhat Handscroll by Li Limin unfolds across an expansive composition nearly ten meters in length, revealing the artist’s profound command of ink painting and contemplative understanding of Buddhist philosophy. Executed primarily in monochromatic ink with restrained touches of color, the eighteen arhats are rendered with distinct appearances and expressive individuality, their tranquil expressions imbued with quiet humanity and spiritual depth.

The handscroll is structured through an elegant integration of painting and calligraphy. Unfolding from right to left, the opening section bears the inscription “Images of the Eighteen Arhats,” while the central passage presents the full text of the Heart Sutra. The concluding section transcribes a poem by the Zen monk Niaoge Daolin: “Coming and going are ultimately the same… this fleeting life is but a dream.”

Through the seamless union of image, scripture, and poetic verse, the work unfolds like both sutra and gāthā, guiding the viewer through a meditative journey in which visual form gradually gives way to spiritual reflection.
