Work Description

In Philippine – 212, Philippe Pasqua constructs a face suspended between formation and dissolution through intense fields of red and black. Splattering, scraping, and overlapping layers of paint transform the portrait into a residual trace of emotional and existential states, rather than a fixed representation.

In this work, Pasqua treats the face as a site where human vulnerability and pain are both held and exposed. Fragmented contours and unstable lines reveal the psychological tensions of an individual caught between internal conflict and external pressure.

Rather than offering a complete image for contemplation, the work compels the viewer to reconsider the definition of the “human” through fragmentation and absence. Philippine – 212 embodies Pasqua’s core conviction: that painting is not the depiction of appearance, but an attempt to approach the truth of existence through instability and disquiet.
