Work Description
This pair of calligraphic couplets by Pu Hsinyu (Puru) is executed in semi-cursive script, revealing brushwork that is both vigorous and refined. The flowing lines embody the elegance of the literati tradition and the artistic spirit for which Pu is widely regarded as one of the last great masters of classical Chinese painting and calligraphy.
The inscriptions convey both auspicious and poetic meanings:
“In harmony without discord, like the sounding of bells and drums;
A household in concord, like the music of qin and se.”
Dedicated as a congratulatory gift for Mr. Liang Cun, the work reflects Pu’s mature calligraphic style during his years in Taiwan. The characters unfold with graceful rhythm and composure, transforming the couplets into more than a gesture of celebration. Here, blessing, personal cultivation, and the art of calligraphy are brought together in a work that embodies both scholarly elegance and enduring cultural tradition.
