Work Description

Ricardo Celma’s Red Virgin and Blue Virgin form a pair of portraits that are at once interconnected and independent. Through an exacting realist technique, Celma renders the female visage and drapery with extraordinary sensitivity.  Subtle modulations of light and shadow bring forth the warmth of the skin and the velvety folds of fabric, creating a presence so vivid that one senses a quiet breath beyond the canvas.

Both figures are depicted with an upward gaze, their expressions gentle yet profound—poised between prayer and a search for transcendence. Set against backgrounds of metallic, leaf-like ornamentation, the compositions evoke a sacred solemnity reminiscent of medieval devotional icons, while Celma’s technical precision anchors them within a contemporary sensibility.

In Blue Virgin, a cool, restrained palette dominates the composition, radiating stillness, purity, and spiritual depth. The mantle, reminiscent of the night sky and the sea, invites introspection and calm, suffusing the image with a quiet, prayer-like atmosphere. Through the interplay of color, Celma reveals the dual nature of innocence—at once fervent and impassioned, yet also serene and transcendent. These works are more than finely executed portraits; they are profound contemplations on the enduring essence of the spirit.
