Work Description
In this imaginative work, blue-and-white porcelain and the apple are ingeniously fused into a single form. Using a vase as its foundation, the artist plays on the Chinese homophonic relationship between ping (瓶, vase) and ping (蘋, apple), deconstructing and reassembling the two into Blue-and-White Porcelain Apple. The resulting object is at once a traditional porcelain vessel and the recognizable form of an apple.
Rendered with meticulous attention to detail, the painting captures the luminous surface, delicate glaze variations, and refined craftsmanship associated with blue-and-white porcelain, bringing the ceramic texture vividly to life. At the same time, the unexpected transformation of a familiar vessel into a fruit introduces an element of wit and visual surprise, inviting viewers to discover new associations and poetic possibilities within an everyday cultural symbol.
Through this inventive fusion of image and language, the work becomes a reflection on the relationship between tradition and contemporary culture. By uniting the globally familiar form of the apple with the visual legacy of blue-and-white porcelain, Tung explores how cultural symbols can be reinterpreted across time and context. The result is a playful yet thoughtful meditation on identity, memory, and the evolving significance of traditional forms within the modern visual landscape.
