Work Description

In this vibrant work, Fafatone Tung Shengho reimagines the iconic figure of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King from the classical Chinese epic Journey to the West, through the visual language of traditional shadow puppetry. Rather than depicting the legendary figure in a purely historical guise, the artist imbues him with the unmistakable pose and stage presence of Michael Jackson, creating a playful and thought-provoking dialogue between Eastern mythology and global popular culture.

Rendered in brilliant color and animated through a dynamic composition, the figure embodies the charisma, vitality, and enduring cultural resonance shared by these two iconic personalities. Rich layers of oil paint and intricate decorative motifs lend the costume a jewel-like luminosity, while shimmering golden accents appear almost inlaid upon the surface, enhancing the work's theatrical energy and visual richness.

By merging the traditional aesthetics of shadow puppetry with contemporary cultural references, Tung transforms a familiar symbol of Chinese folklore into a compelling reflection on cultural exchange and reinvention. The work celebrates the resilience of traditional heritage while acknowledging the fluid movement of images, ideas, and identities across an increasingly interconnected world.
