Work Description

Carved from a single piece of ivory, this sculpture displays the material’s smooth, luminous quality and the exceptional craftsmanship of the carver. The standing female figure may be interpreted as either the compassionate Bodhisattva Guanyin or an evocation of He Xiangu, the only female Immortal among the Eight Immortals. Her hair is arranged in an elegant high coiffure, while her gently modeled features and faint smile convey a sense of grace, serenity, and spiritual refinement.

Flowing robes cascade to the ground and appear to billow softly in the breeze, lending the figure a remarkable sense of movement and vitality. In her right hand she carries a flower basket, while her left delicately holds a lotus stem—traditional symbols of compassion, purity, and transcendence. Standing beside a lovesick tree, she embodies both dignity and lyrical elegance, her poised stance balancing stillness with subtle animation.

The sculpture exemplifies the classical aesthetic ideal often described as “Wu Dai Dang Feng” (“robes flowing in the wind”), in which drapery becomes a vehicle for expressing rhythm, grace, and inner spirit. Through its refined carving and harmonious composition, the work captures a timeless vision of feminine beauty imbued with spiritual resonance and poetic charm.
