Work Description
Domineering the World marks Wang Zhaoju’s first monumental exploration of Genghis Khan, venturing into the realm of historical epic narrative. The artist traveled extensively—from Jiangnan and Mount Jiuhua to the Pavilion of Prince Teng and the Inner Mongolian grasslands—visiting museums, ancient battlefields, and heritage sites to internalize the Mongolian spirit and historical context. He transformed these rich experiences into a distinctive artistic language.
Recreating the immense scene of a grand army swearing its oath before marching to war, the work pulsates with thundering drums and galloping horses. On the twelve-meter canvas, Wang meticulously arranged the rhythm of figures, warhorses, and the golden-topped command tent, highlighting the central theme and sustaining a commanding momentum. The weighty, somber palette intensifies the oppressive yet heroic prelude to battle, while the interplay of the tangible and the ethereal conveys both the sweeping scope of history. This masterpiece stands as a fervent tribute to the heroic epic, embodying the artist’s mission to pursue grand narratives and evoke a profound spiritual resonance with the past.
