Work Description
Zhao Shaoang’s Bird on Bamboo was painted in 1965 during his mature period after settling in Hong Kong. Employing his signature zhuangshui zhuangfen technique, in which water and pigment interact fluidly on the paper, Zhao combines wet and dry brushwork to capture the graceful movement of the bamboo as it angles across the composition. Pale ink and dry-brush strokes shape the delicate shadows of the leaves, creating an atmosphere of quiet spaciousness, while the lively little bird is rendered with only a few deft strokes.
Fresh and refined, the composition balances solidity and emptiness with remarkable ease. The inscription reads, “In the summer of 1965, painted as a gift for Ms. Manshi. Shaoang in Hong Kong,” accompanied by the seal “Shaoang.” Created as an intimate gift for a friend, this exceptional work embodies the Lingnan School’s synthesis of Chinese and Western approaches and its profound sensitivity to the natural world.
