Work Description

In Cicada Nibbling on Grapes, Zhao Shaoang invites the viewer into a delicate and contemplative world of minute natural details. In the upper right, a cluster of vermilion-red berries hangs like a string of pearls, set against autumn leaves rendered through his distinctive interplay of ink and water. Their rich, subdued colors lend the composition a sense of depth and quiet refinement, while the vivid blue beetle clinging to the fruit is depicted with remarkable precision and delicacy.

Pale bamboo shadows, outlined in dry ink along the left, introduce a sense of openness and airy restraint. The inscription reads, “For Mr. Congshan’s correction. Shaoang, winter of 1960,” accompanied by the red zhuwen seal “Shaoang” and the artist’s distinctive pictorial seal depicting a Buddha figure. Seamlessly integrating the keen observational precision of Western painting with the suggestive spatial sensibility of Chinese ink, the work exemplifies Zhao’s refined approach to flowers, birds, and insects within the Lingnan tradition.
