Artist Profile

Introduction and Experience
Hwang Chunpi (1898–1991, China), also known as Huang Junbi, was one of the most influential ink painters and art educators of the twentieth century. After relocating to Taiwan in 1949, he became one of the celebrated “Three Masters Crossing the Sea,” alongside Chang Daichien and Pu Hsinyu, and was widely revered as a leading figure in Taiwan’s art world.
Trained under Li Yaoping, Hwang studied both traditional Chinese painting and Western art, establishing a broad and versatile artistic foundation. Throughout his career, he devoted himself to art education and cultural exchange, teaching at National Central University and National Taiwan Normal University, while traveling extensively across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa to study art education, present exhibitions, and deliver lectures, contributing significantly to the international dissemination of Chinese ink painting.
Renowned primarily for his landscape paintings, Hwang developed a distinctive style that combines the elegance of traditional brushwork with a monumental sense of space. Emerging from the Lingnan tradition while forging his own artistic language, his paintings unite classical aesthetics with modern sensibilities. Widely regarded as a leading representative of the “New Classical” approach to Chinese painting, Hwang occupies an important place in the development of modern Chinese landscape art.
