Introduction and Experience
Huang Junbi (1898-1991), originally named Yunzhi, also known as Junbi, Junweng, and in his later years as Mishou Laoren, was an important modern Chinese ink painter and art educator. He moved to Taiwan in 1949 and, along with Zhang Daqian and Pu Xinyu, was known as one of the "Three Masters Who Crossed the Sea," revered as a "Grand Master of Painting" in the Taiwanese art world. In his early years, he studied under Li Yaoping, learning both traditional Chinese and Western painting, laying a profound and broad artistic foundation.
He dedicated his life to art education and cultural promotion, teaching at National Central University and National Taiwan Normal University. He was also dispatched to Europe, America, Asia, and Africa on numerous occasions to study art education, hold art exhibitions, and give lectures, his footprints covering four continents. He received numerous honors, including the First Prize in the Fine Arts Division of the Chinese Arts Award, the National Special Contribution Award for Arts, and the Academic Medal from St. John's University in New York, making outstanding contributions to the international dissemination of Chinese art.
Huang Junbi is renowned in the art world for his landscape paintings. His brushwork is light and elegant yet possesses a majestic momentum. Through the inheritance of tradition and the transformation of modernity, he has been hailed by the Western art world as a "Chinese Neoclassical School". His works, which developed from the Lingnan style, form a unique system. They combine classical spirit with the spirit of the times, making them an important milestone in modern Chinese landscape painting.
