Artist Profile

Introduction and Experience
Liu Jiutong (b. 1977, China) is best known for his abstract landscapes, through which he reinterprets the poetic spirit of traditional Chinese shan shui painting. Integrating Western painting materials with the expressive brushwork of Chinese calligraphy and ink traditions, he creates richly layered compositions that balance abstraction with the enduring essence of landscape. Although nonrepresentational in form, his works embody the Chinese aesthetic ideal of existing "between likeness and unlikeness," allowing viewers to experience the vitality and spirit of nature beyond literal representation.
For Liu, landscape is not merely a subject but a living, spiritually resonant presence. Through a sustained dialogue with mountains and rivers, he transforms his emotional responses to the natural world into dynamic fields of color and gesture. Rooted in the traditions of Chinese ink painting yet expressed through the materiality of oil and mixed media, his paintings evoke expansive landscapes that are at once contemplative, expressive, and deeply atmospheric.
