Artist Profile
Introduction and Experience
Park Yi Chul (b. 1969, North Korea) is a distinguished practitioner of contemporary Korean painting (Chosonhwa). After graduating from the Korean Painting Department at the Pyongyang University of Fine Arts in 1991, he joined the renowned Mansudae Art Studio, where he began his professional artistic career. In 2015, he was awarded the title of “Meritorious Artist” and currently holds the rank of First-Class Painter.
Working within the deeply rooted traditions of Chosonhwa, Park integrates classical brushwork with a refined modern sensibility. He is particularly known for his detailed and atmospheric depictions of North Korea’s natural landscapes, portraying subjects that range from rugged mountain ranges and flowing rivers to tranquil rural vistas. His representative works include The Road Home After Work, Meditation, and Mount Jangsu, alongside landscape series Beautiful Mountains and Clear Waters and Splendid Rivers and Mountains.
Park’s paintings are characterized by disciplined linework, vibrant coloration, and a rigorous sense of spatial composition. Repeatedly selected for major national exhibitions and the recipient of numerous state honors, his works balance technical precision with philosophical resonance. Through landscapes of quiet grandeur and contemplative depth, Park reveals an artistic language that transcends realism to evoke a profound sense of place and spirit.
