Artist Profile

Introduction and Experience
Zhao Shaoang (1905–1998), courtesy name Shuyi, was one of the four major masters of the Lingnan School’s second generation, alongside Li Xiongcai, Guan Shanyue, and Yang Shanshen. A student of Gao Qifeng and one of the celebrated “Seven Masters of Tianfeng,” Zhao sought to modernize Chinese painting by integrating traditional Chinese brushwork with Japanese and Western painterly techniques, playing a pivotal role in bringing Chinese art to a global audience.
Renowned for his depictions of flowers, birds, insects, and fish, Zhao created works distinguished by vivid color, inventive compositions, and a keen responsiveness to the natural world. Emphasizing the expressive power of calligraphic brushwork alongside the pleasures of everyday life, he later settled in Hong Kong where he founded the Lingnan Art Academy. Through decades of dedicated teaching and exhibitions around the world, Zhao made a lasting contribution to the international recognition of Chinese ink art.
